The school of environmental science and engineering was jointly established by ShandongUniversityand Environmental Protection Agency of Shandong province, where education, scientific research, innovation and environmental analysis testing service are conducted. It is a teaching and research base aimed at training senior talents of environmental science and engineering. Qu Geping, who is the former Director General of Environmental Protection Agency and famous environmental protection expert along with Jiang Guibin, who is the head of Environmental Research Center of ChineseAcademyofSciences, member of CAS are nominated as honorary deans. In the third-round National First-level Subjects Evaluation, held by Ministry of Education, SDU-SESE’s environmental subjects ranked No.12.
The school was founded in 2001 which consists of Environmental Engineering, laboratory center ofShandongUniversityand environmental courses of Environmental and Chemical Engineering of Shandong University of Technology. Now the school has 63 serving faculties, 427 undergraduates and 260 graduates. There are three departments: environmental science, environmental engineering, resources and environmental; eight graduate schools: environmental chemistry and engineering technology, environmental biotechnology, environmental biotechnology and functional materials, river basin water environment, air pollution control, resources recycling and environmental protection and new materials, resources circulation and clean production techniques, strategic environmental assessment and planning; two centers: modern analysis and test, the environmental teaching center. It has established“Elite class of environment and health”withChineseAcademyof Sciences in 2013, which is aimed to cultivate ecological research center of high-level top creative talents.
Faculty in the school, which are passionate about their job, have a significant impact on the inland and outland academic field. There are 20 full professors, 29 associate professors and senior engineers, 15 doctoral supervisors and 36 master tutors, including 1 member of Chinese Academy of Engineering, 1 Taishan Scholar, 1 Quancheng Scholar, 7 New Century Excellent Talents of the Ministry of Education.
At present, the school has established a high level of teaching and research platform. The school has environmental science and engineering doctoral programs, environmental science and engineering postdoctoral; a national specialty, a provincial professional brand of Shandong Province, a key subject of Shandong Province, a key laboratory of Shandong Province and a provincial Engineering Technology Center. There are 9 professional lab all together, which cover 1620 square meters. What’s more, a variety of large-scale precision equipments which cost over 30 million are owned by the school. College of the State Department of Environmental Protection has issued a Class "Environmental Impact Assessment Certificate" and theShandongProvinceand Technical Supervision issued a "certificate of authentication measures."
In recent years, the school undertook more than 500 science and research topics including major projects of the National Science and Technology, "863", the state scientific and technological support key projects, the National Natural Science Foundation of China, Colleges and Universities Fostering Projects of Major Projects, the Ministry of Education excellent teachers funded projects, the State Environmental Protection Department of Shandong Province and funding projects, research projects and foreign cooperation projects. There is one project honored by the National Science and Technology Progress Award, two honored by Ten Scientific and Technological Achievements of Shandong province Award, 31 honored by Provincial Science and Technology Progress Award and the Natural Science Award as well as four honored by Provincial Outstanding Teaching Award. More than 1000 papers has been published in domestic and overseas academic research journals. Among those, one piece was selected in 2012 China One Hundred Most Influential International Academic, more than 600 articles were contained by SCI and EI, what’s more, we have published over 10 monographs.
The school consists on full range of open development strategy, and cooperates with other national or foreign universities, research institutes, and domestic medium-sized enterprises. More and more international academic exchanges and cooperative researches take place. The school has established close cooperation with Georgia Institute of Technology, Yeshiva University Albert Einstein School of Medicine, Indiana University, Iowa State University, Stevens Institute of Technology, University of Liverpool, UK, Australia, James Cook University, University of Tokyo, Japan Gifu University, Karl Silu University of Technology, University of Regina, Canada, the Hong Kong polytechnic university, Singapore Nanyang technological university, Sweden royal institute of technology, Tsinghai university, the Ecology and Environmental Research Center of Chinese Academy of Sciences, and East China University of Science and Technology.
The school pays attention to students' innovative education. Recently, students did well in the "Challenge Cup" National Undergraduate Curricular Academic Science and Technology Works and Collegiate Business Plan Competition Contest. They have won a number of National, provincial awards, including the gold medal of the eighth "Challenge Cup" in 2012. Many papers have been published in SCI, EI, and many patents have been authorized. School also pays attention to develop students’ ability of social practice with the creating a "WAA", "green into the primary school" and other boutique items. Activities carried out have won many prides and reports by national, provincial and other media, leaving a good social impact.
